Final Project TED Talk

Final Project TED Talk

(Please read and let me know if you have any question)

TED Talk Project; 30 points 30%; Due 24 hours before Week 13 Live Session Throughout the term, we’ve explored the historical and present components of a variety of theoretical models and perspectives. You’ve experimented with deconstructing these models and situating them within the social work paradigm that incorporates intentional attention to DEIPAR. Your final assignment in Practice I is designed to be a culmination of the understanding and skills you’ve developed this semester. You will develop a “TED” style talk (“TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design) that blends storytelling, research, and oral performance, and even imagery to inform your audience of your chosen theoretical perspective guided by the DEIPAR lens.

TED Talks have become popular with a variety of audiences and span virtually all topics, so you should find plenty of examples that inspire you to contribute your own voice to a conversation about your theory of choice. Although you will not be “presenting” this to a live audience, you will be creating a 7-10 minute video (either recorded on your own device or recorded via your zoom account) that will be available to the instructor and your peers for review. Guidelines for TED Talk: Remember that the fundamentals of writing and rhetorical practice remain the same in this process.

  • Choose a different theory from paper one, to cover in your talk.
  • Video length 7-10 minutes (videos longer than 10 minutes will receive point deductions)
  • Incorporate a slideshow that enhances the discussion with compelling images (and text, when appropriate…be mindful to not make it a PowerPoint presentation)
  • State explicitly what your audience should take away from your presentation that is different from what they likely knew, felt, or believed before. ○ At minimum, be sure to cover the following elements:

17 ■ Discuss populations researched in the older and recent articles and shifts in population, if any. If diversity is represented, note any themes addressed in the articles related to that diversity, both regarding percentages of the sample and relative representation of the general population. As with paper one, use a minimum of 6 theory research articles and add others as needed.

■ discuss the philosophical underpinnings and deconstruct it based on its underlying assumptions of the theory and the driving factors behind its development, to identify relevant concerns for its application with diverse groups.

■ Consider what you’ve learned about the underlying assumptions, and how you would counter the assumptions that did not align with the social justice principles represented by the DEIPAR organizing framework.

  • Specifically discuss how you would address the clinical power dynamics.

■ Discuss your concerns about applying the theory with members of populations not included among the research participants.

■ Add a discussion of use of self that integrates how to approach use of self from a socially just perspective (use the DEIPAR principles)

■ Also address what shifts may be needed to adjust the theory as needed for a socially just application that does not change the theory into something different. Indicate which key basic assumptions of the theory would remain unchanged and which would be adjusted (& in what ways).

  • Provide evidence and examples to develop your discussion.
  • be sure to bring your creativity and your passion. It is important to consider what you think audiences should be excited about. Part of your task is to engage the audience, so don’t be afraid to show your passion!
  • Utilize a storytelling format. It doesn’t have to be your story, but one that can make contact (See list resource links below or ones that you are familiar with).
