3.9 How do we make sense of a picture?3.9 How do we make sense of a picture?

Overview:

The purpose of this assignment is to practice applying the various concepts that we learned regarding visual perception.  Although we are not always aware of the process, we use these perceptual principles constantly as we take in information from out environment.

Instructions:

1.  Review information

Review the information on Gestalt principles, monocular depth cues, perceptual constancy and perceptual set in section 3.7 Sensation and Perception

2.  Respond to the prompt

Define perception.  Make sure to use the definition used in this unit, not the more general meaning of the term.  It is okay to state the textbook definition as part of your answer, as long as you add a sentence or two that shows that you understand the defintion.

Choose one of the images below (you may need to scroll down) to discuss.  For the picture that you have chosen, first say which picture (a, b, c, or d) then answer three of the following four questions, writing at least two or three sentences per question.

Choose one of the Gestalt principles, briefly explain how it works, and explain how it applies to your perception of the picture.

Choose one of the monocular depth cues, briefly explain how it works, and explain how it applies to your perception of the picture.

Choose one type of perceptual constancy, briefly explain how it works, and explain how it applies to your perception of the picture.

Explain how perceptual set works and how it influences your perception of the picture.
