• Paul, who is 42 years old, has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Recent treatments have slowed down the progression of the disease, but Paul had been informed he at best has 3-4 years left. Paul experiences a lot of anger, towards God, life, his healthy friends, and all of the unfairness he sees in the situation. He is seeking counseling as this anger is growing and permeates every aspect of his life.

• Tom is a 33 years’ old married man, who has recently become a father. He explains that he feels his self-esteem has been gradually deteriorating ever since he was married. He feels inadequate as a husband. He states that his relationships with his wife’s family is strained, and he sees that as the root of his problems, as they do not approve of him. He has always continued to extend himself to great personal lengths to win and maintain his in-laws’ support, yet they are still critical of him, even though he agreed he, his wife and the baby will visit them 3 times a week, as per the in-law’s request.

• Julia is a peri-menopausal 49-year-old woman, living with her elderly parents. She had been diagnosed with a pervasive developmental disorder with accompanying intellectual impairment. Her parents brought her to counseling, as they have been noticing signs of what they believe to be depression; Julia stays in her room more frequently and does not seem to find joy in what had in the past been pleasing for her.

• Sophie is a 35 years old woman, who came to counseling 6 months after the break-up of her 9 years marriage to Mike, the father of her 2 young children. She was referred to counseling by her PCP. Sophie took a year off from work after the birth of her second child, and as she prepared to return to her job, Mike has informed her that he had fallen in love with another woman and is filing for a divorce from Sophie.

• Dave and Jane bring their 14 years-old, Anna, to see a counselor. When speaking with Anna individually, she speaks of being suspended from school for 3 weeks, until she sees a counselor, due to the fact that she left for a few days on a trip with some older boys, despite her parents’ disapproval. She shares that she recently tried marijuana and is considering having sex with her 18 years old boyfriend.
