Assignment: Composing an Effective Paraphrase of a Source Passage

This Assignment provides more practice in the essential skill of paraphrasing. You will also learn how to incorporate a short quotation following APA style. In the Week 3 Discussion, you paraphrased a single sentence. In this Assignment, you will paraphrase a paragraph and include a short quotation in your paraphrase.

To prepare for this Assignment:

Think about Walden’s policy on academic integrity and review the Week 3 Resources on paraphrasing strategies and the proper use of quotations.

The Assignment:

Compose a two-paragraph essay in which you paraphrase the source passage below and analyze the process you used. In your first paragraph, paraphrase the source passage. Your paraphrase should contain 3–6 sentences and should include one short quotation. Make sure to include proper in-text citations, and place the quoted material in quotation marks. In your second paragraph, explain the challenges you encountered when paraphrasing the passage and the strategies you used to overcome these challenges. Make sure to follow the paraphrasing guidelines in the Week 3 Resources. Finally, include the reference for the source passage at the end of your paper.

Source passage:

“The problem of plagiarism and piracy in the Asian context does not necessarily have its origin in a lack of academic integrity. Japan has strong rules for proper behaviour in nearly every field of life and work, including at schools and universities. Copyright violations have severe consequences in fields which matter. The intellectual property divisions of universities have strict regulations concerning the announcement and use of intellectual property rights. Cheating in the Japanese university system, whether committed by students or professors, is rigidly condemned. Copying from other students during exams is regarded as a crime. In Japan, ironically students who are sharing and reproducing a common educational compendium insist to take their ‘own’ entrance exam. Personal competition seems to force them to accept the rules. If they once have succeeded to enter the university they are embedded in collective structures and collaboration is requested as it is in school and work life. The situation in China is not much different. Competition in both countries matters at most in a later stage of academic research particularly when recognition outside small academic circles becomes crucial. Then, a more competitive climate requires better proofs of individual performance from the researchers. But these adopted values are only a current in the mainstream of an old tradition in which it is not the individual, but the community, that is important” (Balve, 2014, p. 88).
