Pls answer any Two

Case # 1

The thesis statement is “They were two strong men, these oddly different generals, and they are represented the strengths of two conflicting currents that, through them, had come into final collision.”

General Robert E. Lee enjoyed the way life used to be for him. People were born into a class, upper, middle or lower class, and stayed there for their life. He thought that land ownership was for the higher class and those are the people who should have the most say in the country. He was more loyal to the area around him as opposed to the whole country. He basically liked the way if the English life, the one that so many people came to what is now known as the United States of America, to escape.

General UIysses S. Grant was the opposite of General Lee. He believed people should have a chance to succeed and earn their place in society. He believed that everyone should have a voice in what was best for the country. He also had a loyalty to the country as a whole. He wanted any one to be able to open a business or own land.

I think Mr. Catton’s purpose in writing this comparison essay is to discuss two figures in history that he respected and thought were a huge part of the history of the country. I think he does a great job of showing this by showing how completely opposite the two generals are but ultimately they were similar in the ways that made them great generals. The also showed in the end that they could be gentlemen and put aside their past rivalry and give each other the respect that each should receive.

Case # 2

Part one – The thesis statement is “They were two strong men, these oddly different generals, and they represented the strengths of two conflicting currents that, through them, had come into final collisions” paragraph three.

Part two – Lee was an old aristocratic. His back ground was all about his family, culture and these traditions. He stood for the leisure class and that land ownership meant something with wealth and influence. Grant was just the opposite in his way of life he felt that a men should work for everything that they earned. He stood for Democracy not by society standing. He lived as if every man did not get privileges it had to be earned.

Part three – The author wanted to show the comparison of the two different men and what they believed. I believe he did accomplish to show the opposites of both men. He showed how each men was raised and what they believed in the past and the future. As he stated it showed the strengths and the weaknesses of each one of their men and how the country would be if Grant or Lee had lead the country.

Case # 3

Catton’s thesis statement found in the Reader selection “Grant and Lee: A Study in Contrasts” on pp. 524-526 is, “They were two strong men, those oddly different generals, and they represented the strengths of two conflicting currents that, through them, had come into final collision.”

Summarize the way of life that Lee stood for and then do the same for Grant. Lee was from the Tidewater region of Virginia, and the things important to him were his family, culture, and traditions. He was a chivalrous, noble, aristocratic leader who represented the ideals of the Southern states to a T. He represented “a class of men with a strong sense of obligation to the community”. On the other hand, Grant had a hard upbringing, which turned him into a tough man who ignored the past and embraced the future. He represented Democracy, and believed that men had to create their own privileges and that “no man was born to anything, except perhaps to a chance to show how far he could rise”. This is because he had a hard childhood, but believes that man has the opportunity and power to rise to something great (as he has). He represented the national community, specifically the nation’s destiny and development.

What is Catton’s purpose in writing this comparison essay? Does he accomplish his purpose well? Why or why not? Please answer in at least three or four well-developed, well-thought-out sentences. The purpose of the essay is the compare these two great Generals. The writer accomplish the purpose of the essay in my own opinion. Catton lays out the important background of each General and also compare how different from each other. Even though the writer is comparing the two and explaining their differences, there were similarities they shared such as, swiftness in battle, tenacity, and resilience which made them revered leaders for their cause. The thesis statement was great as it describe how the two men commit themselves to hold the nation as one despite of their differences.
