This assignment will examine the importance and role of organization culture to ethical behavior and equip you with the tools needed to develop organization cultures that encourage and promote ethical behavior.

Background Information

In James 3:13-18, after a brief analysis of double-mindedness and fruit-bearing, you see guidance that says, “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom” (New International Version). Such public demonstrations of your deeds are offered as examples of how others determine or gauge your legitimacy – it is not what you say that they “hear,” but what you do. The same is true for organizations; corporate edicts of ethical policies and admonishments to promote customer service mean little when the leaders engage or promote behaviors with no regard for their ethicality.


  1. Read Chapter 9 in both the Essentials of Business Ethics and the Ethical Challenges of Leadership textbooks.
  2. Download and review the PowerPoint presentation, Chapter 9.ppt .
  3. View the video “Patagonia: Human Resource Management.”
  4. As you read and view these resources, think about how the underlying values and beliefs of some organization which you are familiar with drive and affect the behavior of members of that organization.
  5. Read Case Study 9.1 on pp. 355-357 of the Ethical Challenges of Leadership textbook.
  6. Write an 800- to 1000-word research paper that addresses the following issues:
    1. What should be the elements of a zero-policy ethics policy?

      2. Provide a detailed evaluation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking.
