Ethical Organizational Culture

Introduction and Alignment

Organizational culture is perhaps the most important element in promoting ethical behavior. Companies can have elaborate codes of conduct and codes of ethics, but if the culture of the organization puts performance above integrity, the individual members of that organization will find themselves pressured to made decisions that are perhaps ethically uncertain. This assignment will examine the importance and role of organization culture to ethical behavior and equip you with the tools needed to develop organization cultures that encourage and promote ethical behavior.

Upon completion of this assignment, you should be able to:

  • Develop organization cultures that promote ethical behavior.

Resources

  • Bible
  • Textbook: Essentials of Business Ethics
  • Textbook: Ethical Challenges of Leadership
  • Video: Patagonia: Human Resource Management
  • File: Chapter 9.ppt

Background Information

In James 3:13-18, after a brief analysis of double-mindedness and fruit-bearing, you see guidance that says, “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom” (New International Version). Such public demonstrations of your deeds are offered as examples of how others determine or gauge your legitimacy – it is not what you say that they “hear,” but what you do. The same is true for organizations; corporate edicts of ethical policies and admonishments to promote customer service mean little when the leaders engage or promote behaviors with no regard for their ethicality.
