The primary goal of humanitarian organizations is to save as many lives as possible and reduce the suffering of human beings during disasters. This can only be done effectively if there are preparedness and adequate resources as well as supplies to facilitate the rescue operation (Apte & Yoho, 2011). Availability of adequate supplies and prepositioning increases the scope and speed of responding to various disasters when they occur. In the case of Tsunami, there was no warning of the disaster and therefore no prepositions of the resources to conduct rescue operations. The operation of moving the supplies was limited by the poor systems of transport caused by the Tsunami calamity. Haiti earthquake was also a sudden disaster and there were no preparations set to handle the situation. Rescue activities were also affected by poor transportation systems (Apte & Yoho, 2011).

The hurricane Katrina that affected the city of New Orleans was known before its occurrence (Apte & Yoho, 2011). Poor planning for the required resources to assist the affected individuals made the rescue operations to be very slow. Despite warnings that had been given to people living in the region, many did not move and therefore ending up being among the victims of the calamity. The 2009 influenza occurred in different geographical locations. There was a poor allocation of the resources and poor planning to respond to the disaster. The rescue operations were also slow.

In the Hurricane disaster, effective planning and allocation of resources could have made the event to be more successful. Since the occurrence of the disaster had been predicted, the government could have set aside resources that were needed to conduct the rescue activities. The rescue operations were also slow in the activities of evacuating the citizens from the affected areas. Effective planning could have saved the time of rescuing activities. The government could also have emphasized the information before the hurricane to make the people around the city to move to other places. Since the information was not communicated effectively, some of the citizens did not move from their home and were severely affected (Apte & Yoho, 2011).
