WRITTEN CASE ANALYSIS INSTRUCTIONS I. CASE ANALYSIS INSTRUCTIONS Each student must complete a number of case analyses (CAs) the semester. The number of the analyses and their point value are given in the syllabus. They will be graded on punctuality, proper form, neatness, grammar, spelling, completeness, accuracy, clarity, and reasonableness. The due date for each is given in the Assignments and the Learning Module on Canvas. To avoid late submission penalties (see more below), the CA must be submitted on the due date. The CA may be turned in any time before the due date. As these are graded, the analysis submitted must be your own. Each CA must be double-spaced, with at least 1 1/2” margins, with pages numbered, and accompanied by a cover sheet as shown at left below. The analysis itself should have the explicit headings and form shown at right below. USE THESE HEADINGS II. FORM OF WRITTEN CASE ANALYSES Ethics Professor Conkling Title of Case Analyzed Case Analysis Number Student’s Name Course Section Due Date of Assignment I. FACTS OF THE CASE Accurately and fully paraphrase and condense in your own words (do not just copy from the article!) the relevant facts of the case. Abbreviations may be used. Do not make any ethical judgements here. Just give the relevant facts. II.ETHICAL THEORY BEING USED TO EVALUATE THE CASE Identify and fully explain the ethical theory or theories that are being used to evaluate the case. Explain how the theory will assist in the evaluation. III ETHICAL QUESTION(S) TO BE ANSWERED Clearly and succinctly state the ethical question or questions involved in the case, but do not give answers yet at this stage. This section should comprise only a sentence or two. Also, make sure that you state that it is a moral question by using expressions like “Was X morally justified …etc.” ) IV. PROPOSED ANSWERS TO ETHICAL QUESTION(S) Explain and defend what in your reasoned view is the morally correct answer to the ethical question identified in Section II above. V. OBJECTIONS TO PROPOSED ANSWERS AND RESPONSES TO THE OBJECTIONS Explain the strongest objections that opponents would give to your proposed answer from Section IV and explain why the objections are flawed. Use sub-headings: OBJECTION (1); RESPONSE (1); OBJECTION (2); RESPONSE (2) etc. See sample case below as a guide. Provide at least two objections. VI. CONCLUSION Add any additional remarks you feel necessary to complete your analysis. This section should be short and succinct. Note: DON’T PUT ANY NEW ARGUMENTATIVE MATERIAL INTO THE CONCLUSION. If you think of new points, put them in Sections III or IV. ITEMS TO BE AVOIDED IN WRITING CASE ANALYSES Don’t put more than one objection in any of the Objection slots in the OBJECTIONS TO PROPOSED ANSWER(S) AND RESPONSE(S) TO THE OBJECTIONS section; provide a separate slot for each objection. Keep the questions in the ETHICAL QUESTION TO BE ANSWERED section “short and sweet.” That is, don’t add any facts into the question which have already been given in the FACTS OF THE CASE section. Keep the questions in the ETHICAL QUESTION TO BE ANSWERED section unbiased.
