After the reading the first three chapters I’ve come to the realization that NPO’s play a more important role in society that I could’ve never imagined. I always knew of most well recognized organizations like food banks, Nonprofit hospitals, etc but things like churches, our own university, and even youth organizations that my cousins, sister, and I have participated in like Florida Everblades figure skating club, and San Carlos park scorpion soccer club are all nonprofit organizations that have all played a major role in our lives. After seeing all of this I have quickly changed changed my perception that NPO’s are purely humanitarian causes and are few and far between to organizations that play a key roles in our everyday lives. 2. Out of all the theories I think the one that best explains why nonprofit sectors exists is the Supply-side theories. Supply side theories are “events based on the motivations of and incentives given to those who produce a good or a service rather than on the motivations of those who have the capability and desire to consume it” (Worth, 2021, Pg: 58). What this means is that Nonprofits get started when an individual or a group of people have a talent, item, or good to provide for the betterment of the community and not for financial gain. I think this theory explains why NPO’s exist better than the others because it all starts with the foundation, with the idea to do good. All the other theories focus on the gain that founders get from NPOs like with the Theories of Altruism and Giving in page 59 of our textbook, but With Supply Side theory it starts from the very beginning with the concept of a service that can help a community and then explains why it should be executed which is a nice change of pace from the typical money hungry corporation we’re used to seeing in our modern age. 3. NPO’s play a lot of different roles in today’s society but the primary ones being in the economy and in health care. With Healthcare “nonprofits provide services related to medical care, housing, nutrition, disease prevention, and a number of other fields seeking to reduce health disparities” (Tulane University, 2020). What this means is that due to nonprofit organizations a lot of health services that are essential in the lives of people locally and globally can be attained due to these Nonprofit sectors. Now on the economical side of things, NPO’s play a huge part there as well, even though we’ve learned that NPO’s can be used as tax write offs as they aren’t providing capitalistic gain they still provide a lot for the economy in other ways. They contribute because “Nonprofits employ 12.3 million people, with payrolls exceeding those of most other U.S. industries, including construction, transportation, and finance” (National Council of Nonprofits, 2021). Capitalistic value isn’t the only thing the economy relies on, the amount of jobs a business/organization can provide is crucial to the economy as well and NPO’s do exactly that by providing more jobs than even most other big industries in the U.S. 4 .What I understand the flywheel to be is sort of a guideline for Nonprofit and For profit organizations to follow in order to provide good quality services for the people. It sets up 5 set of principles each with their own set of rules that ensures efficiency in these organizations. The first step is all about finances which basically is how to pay staff, directors, advertising and all that. Second step is about the importance of employees wether they be paid, volunteers, etc. Employees are a big part that dictate how successful a business will be. The third step is establishing the cost of your work so in essence the amount of money you need to run your operation. 4th step is all about the customers and how a business cant thrive without them. And lastly the 5th step is about what kind of service the NPO provides for the community. I think these guidelines are necessary in order to provide a successful NPO and will be using this whenever I have to run one. Part B After reading the first three chapters what are your thoughts on the existence of the nonprofit sector? I believe that nonprofits play a large role in our world today. There are many organizations that are nonprofits that exist for communities to service the underserved. To be able to provide these services, being a nonprofit is important to qualify for the grants and funding. I live in a very rural area in the mountains in Colorado and we have rural clinics that are known as Rural Health Centers. Even though our hospital and clinics are all under the nonprofit umbrella, these RHCs have even more benefits through rural health grants to better serve individuals with no insurance such as sliding fee scales or even free health care, diagnostic testing, etc. Every mission of a nonprofit may differ, but the mission of our hospital is to “is to enhance the health of our community through the delivery of personalized and exceptional care” – and if it wasn’t for the nonprofit existence, it would be very difficult to succeed. What theory do you believe best explains why the nonprofit sector exists? It is of my opinion that the nonprofit sector exists due to the Economics theory in this era. Even in healthcare, the field has become more of a consumer driven market with the goal of goods and services. Nonprofit organizations can aid individuals which may have difficulty getting care from government agencies (such as immigrants, mentally ill or those that do not have a home). These individuals may find it hard to access government programs on their own and locating these services. Rural areas have nonprofits that can assist with care to individuals who may have difficulty traveling to metropolitan areas due to economic hardships. There are many successes and failures to the economic theory, and this fluctuates with the market as it fluctuates. Large nonprofits (such as Lee Health) are not as noticeable to the public when hardships happen, such as COVID, but employees were hit hard with layoffs because of the hard impact of financial setbacks due to sudden loss of elective surgeries, appointments, radiological scans, etc. This was essential, however, to restructure finances in the COVID emergent situation to remain available to the community and maintain operations. Accommodate diversity: Nonprofits give voice to groups with differing values, beliefs and practices that can’t be accommodated within government. Nonprofits are to treat all citizens equally. Undertake experimentation: Nonprofits can undertake research and development for social programs. They can begin new program on a smaller scale and take a greater risk than the government with public funding. New programs developed by nonprofits that are successful can then be incorporated into government efforts. Provide freedom from bureaucracy: Nonprofits may be able to respond more efficiently and quickly to new needs because they don’t have the red tape that characterize the government. Attention to minority needs: Government’s priorities must be consistent with those of most voters. Even though there might not be gov’t support for these programs to meet the needs of these groups. The flywheel principle is very interesting. I appreciate your breakdown of the nonprofit community, customers, operations, employees, and finances. At my workplace we have what we call a ‘strategic plan’ that every employee must be a part of. This is something that is accessible by every employee on our share drive. Of course, the target current, short and long is worded different, but it is exactly the same. Our goals must be measurable and there is a strategic plan for every department. This is important so every employee can stay engaged in patient centered care; can understand the budget needs (operations, finance); can understand the mission of the nonprofit organization (hospital); administration and management does ‘one on ones’ and we have annual employee satisfaction surveys that we are asked to fill out every year (essential for employee retention).
