Practicing within our scope is essential to delivering safe and efficient nursing care. Nurses are granted the skills and knowledge to practice with autonomy. Although we practice with this autonomy, it is still important to understand clearly what skills and decision making is within our scope, what we are able to delegate, and how to practice safely, so we do not cause harm to our patients, in order to do no harm to our patients. This scope is defined in the “Rules and Regulations” on the Arizona State Board of Nursing website. The rules and regulations outline the scope of the registered nurse, CNA and advance practice registered nurses.
When identifying if an action is within the scope/domain of nursing practice, the following factors should be considered; Scope and Standard of practice, law of the state in which you are practicing, institutional policies and procedures, Self determination and professional liability and accountability . According to the ANA, “In the document, Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, scope of practice is defined by the “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how” of nursing practice, including advanced practice nursing” (American Nurses Association, 2016). Self determination includes determining what is within your individual scope. For example if you are asked perform a skill or procedure you have not performed or been trained to perform, the ethical and safe determination to make is to not perform this skill, although it is within your scope as a nurse. It is also important to consider your specialty. If you work as a medical-surgical nurse in the float pool, it would be unsafe to accept an assignment in Labor and Delivery or a critical care unit unless you have received proper training.
