Abstract: A qualitative study using ethnographic methods to study the processes related to addressing social and structural issues in the New York City region. I engaged with “Hour Children” a non-profit volunteer organization as a participant observer. I spent six hours working with administrators, volunteers and clients/those in need/recipients distributing food. The experience was enjoyable and empowering and provides a much-needed service. Hypothesis: Looking at the social issue, what did you think you would find? For example: Is investment (personally, publicly, federally) in social support systems worthwhile? Will experience live up to prior negative interactions with volunteers? Introduction: Starting with NewYorkCares.org I partnered with “Hour Children”/Bowery Mission/etc to Methods: Positionality- how do you see yourself engaging in the process (relationship to need, privilege, age, ethnicity etc. as relevant). What did you do? College students? Age? Gender? Etc… Measures: explain your survey: did you create it or is it already a well-known survey (if so, what is the name of the survey). Created on google forms. How many questions on your topic and give an example of a survey item you used? Explain your likert scale. What was the question(s) used to evaluate school success? Procedure: Recruited online? Sent a google form survey, anonymous, consent form, length of time it likely took them to complete METHODS What were the average scores on your topic survey AND on your question about academic achievement. State what statistical test you used- either a t-test or a correlation. How did you run the analysis (either with an online statistics calculator or using excel COPY-PAST a graph with your results RESULTS CONCLUSIONS Restate the goal of your study and what your expectations (hypothesis) was Explain your results in plain words. Was your hypothesis accepted (were you right)? Why do you think you were right or wrong Summarize the previous research and indicate whether your results are congruent (similar) or different than what other researchers found. If different, why might your study show different results than others Limitations: small sample size, survey could have been clearer, should have examined gender, age, ethnic differences, etc… FUTURE RESEARCH Future work: how could future research benefit this topic? What other study designs should be used?
