The two benefits of having computerized of academics include improved efficiency and increased access to information. Having everything digitalized helps me stay organized and allow more time for me to do other things. I am able to have multiple tabs up instead of a messy desk with scattered papers. I am able to combine information more efficiently. Typing is a lot quicker than handwriting, thus gets work done quicker. I am able to quickly scan over my work as well as correct errors more effortlessly. Distance learning allows me to manage time in a way that works best for me. This allows more efficiency on my end because I do not have to wait on other students to finish their work to continue forward. Having the information a few clicks away is much easier than having to shelve through books. Before computers, many students had to flip through encyclopedia to get the information they needed. Now instead of having to find an encyclopedia, students are able to look online that bring up results faster. Distance learning also allows more access to resources compared to in classroom where information can be restrained to books on hand. It is harder for me to connect to my peers over the screen as when I am working via remotely, I am isolated from others vs when I am in the classrooms. Having a computer screen for a nursing education is not the same as hands on training in real life. This can cause difficulty in real world situation as some students have never been dealt with a real patient. With online training, it is also different managing confidentiality related to HIPAA. Nursing students need to adapt on how to apply skills into real life scenarios and that takes practice.

From my experience with both on-ground and distance learning there are certainly pros and cons to both. Two benefits that have accompanied the computerization of academics are the accessibility of school material and the ability to work on your own timing. I realized that the ability to access notes, lectures, PowerPoints, and other materials whenever and wherever has been incredibly beneficial to my academic achievement. With the use of online classes, I have been able to complete my work/assignments and study whenever I am able or whenever I desire. Usually, the quiz and tests dates have some flexibility as well. As someone who suffers from test anxiety, online classes have, in a lot of ways, that flexibility with tests and quizzes and the ability to take them from the comfort of my home has eased some of my test anxiety. Two challenges that have accompanied that computerization of academics is not having that in person classroom environment that facilitates collaboration and the confusion regarding the online platform (in some instances). The teacher being available for in person questions/concerns during class was helpful when in the classroom environment. Regarding the confusion of computerization of academics, an example is that I have had experienced where due dates online don’t match what the teacher previously explained or the submission “boxes” for assignments online give very vague explanation. These issues could potentially cause late or missed assignments. Experiences regarding nursing education specifically, I found the online “patient simulations” in previous classes to be confusing, time consuming, and honestly not that beneficial. Labs done in person with the instructor present is a much better learning environment in my opinion. The instructor is able to see how the students are working with the mannequins and they are able to provide in person feedback. Students can also ask questions prior to performing the skills. In a study done during the COVID-19 pandemic, nursing students were evaluated for their academic performance with online learning (Cengiz, 2022). Students reported feelings associated their online learning with stress, anxiety, and uncertainty (Cengiz, 2022). Students also reported feelings of discouragement because students stated that “distance education was not efficient.” (Cengiz, 2022).
