Persuasive Writing in Context

For this assignment, you will examine a proposed solution to a local issue. Based on evidence provided from local sources, you will form a position on the solution. You will then write a persuasive letter or speech recommending the approval or dismissal of the proposal based on your position.

The Situation

The Prosper Town Council is considering a proposal in the wake of an increase in barroom brawls that would require all drinking establishments licensed as bars to have certified bouncers present after 9 pm to provide security for patrons and staff. Supporters of this proposal believe that certified bouncers would be better able to handle and deter violent outbreaks. Opponents believe this proposal to be ineffective in reducing violence and an additional financial burden to bars.

In deciding whether to accept or reject the proposal, the Prosper Town Council has invited concerned individuals to make their views known. You are Pardeep Paradero, a current resident. You have considered information and opinions from a variety of sources (see Persuasive Writing Sources Document attached below). After considering the advantages and disadvantages of the proposal, you have reached a decision. You now need to write a persuasive letter or speech that clearly develops your position.

Note: While addresses are not included for the town council nor Pardeep, when you write a letter you will have to include them. So, make them up. Have fun with it.

Directions

Write a speech or letter that will persuade the Prosper Town Council to either ACCEPT or REJECT the certified bouncers proposal.

In preparing your persuasive speech or letter, BE SURE TO

• study the information in the Persuasive Writing Sources Document attached below
• consider your purpose and audience
• present a clear argument that explains the reasons behind your decision
• use an appropriate tone

Remember that you must clearly and directly choose either to accept or to reject the proposal.
