Working with vulnerable adults in a counseling setting can be challenging.  Please identify a situation  of adult maltreatment.  In your response, please identify the dilemma, how you would handle the dilemma, the ACA code of ethic, and what possible ethical and legal concerns you face as the counselor.  Please make sure you are backing your opinions with APA formatted citations.  

DP 2 Family Secrets

Do you think that family counselors should keep family secrets?  Why or why not?  Please explain in detail (with references) your position and rationale.  Please provide an example (different from your classmates) that supports your position

DP 3 Reporting suspected child abuse or neglect

The ACA Code of Ethics (2005) does not specifically address child abuse reporting, but it is essential to understand how and what to do when a child discloses abuse during a counseling session.  

Amaya is a 10 year old who you have been seeing for counseling in a community mental health clinic for about 4 months.  She was referred to counseling due to social issues and anxiety.  She has been a willing participant in counseling, yet has made limited progress. You believe you have a good connection/relationship with her.  During one session she discloses that she has a secret.  You probe for additional information and she tells you “her father touches her in her private area when they are alone.”  

Please answer the following questions:  Do you ask for details/gather more information?  Do you tell her mother?  Call the father?  Call the police?  Do you call Child and Protective Services?  What steps do you take?
