For this assignment, you will write an approximately 600 word reflection paper (about 2 full pages, double-spaced, font-size 12, Times New Roman with 1 inch margins all around). You must use – and display an understanding of – at least 5 out of the 12 sources, paying attention to how the authors, audience, supporting facts, tone, vocabulary, and writing support their message(s). Furthermore, you must reflect on how the sources we have read for this unit inform your understanding, and by extension, historians’ understanding, of the French Revolution.

Your grade will be determined as follows (100 points in total):

  • Demonstrated understanding of the overall message(s) of each of the 5 sources (5 points each)
  • Demonstrated understanding of how authorship and audience effect each of the sources (10 points overall)
  • Demonstrated understanding of how the authors use evidence to support their messages (10 points overall)
  • Demonstrated understanding of how the vocabulary, tone, and writing of the sources reflect their authors’ messages (10 points overall)
  • Demonstrated understanding of how the type of sources they are, i.e., primary sources, inform your understanding or historians’ understanding of the French Revolution
  • The accuracy and effectiveness of your writing (15 points overall)
  • Your support for your argument, using specific references to the texts (10 points overall)
  • Proper use of citations (10 points overall)

Historians generally use Chicago or Turabian formatting for their citations. However, if you are familiar with a different formatting style for notes, such as MLA or APA, you may use it, so long as you declare which style you are using at the top of the paper and use that format consistently.
