ADMS 2541 Spending Plan Assignment Due Sunday, March 12 th by 11:59pm . Must be submitted through Turnitin on Moodle. This assignment is designed to help you understand your financial situation better. There are several parts of this assignment, starting with identifying your values and financial goals. Next, you will be asked to track your spending for the entire month o f October . At the end of October , you will use this information to complete a cash flow statement (for October ) as well as a spending plan for subsequent months. 1. Identify the values that are most important to you. This was part of the assignment in Week 1. Next, identify at least 3 financial goals you have. Be specific about the goals (SMART goals). These should be short -term (less than a year), intermediate -term (2 -5 years) and long – term (more than 5 years). As you go through the exercise , you will be expected to relate your spending to you r values and goals (if they don’t align – which is common! – that is okay, it’s part of the lesson). 2. Begin tracking all of your income and expense s for the entire month. Your income is all incoming money – including money from parents or financial aid to help you pay for university, full -time or part -time work and even that cheque from your Aunt for your birthday. Your expenses include all your mone tary expenditures. This includes things such as that coffee you bought this morning, the TTC pass you needed for the month, gas in your car, the pack of gum you bought at the gas station, etc. You have the option of doing this manually or using some sort of application. For example, Mint.com will help you track anything purchased on a credit or debit card if you link it to your Mint.com account. Don’t forget to include cash spending as well. There are many other apps that can be used, such as “You Need a B udget” (found here: https://www.youneedabudget.com/ ). It is free for the first year for college students. Other resources can be found on Moodle. 3. At the end of the month, use all the data you collected to construct a cash flow statement . This is not a list of all your expenses, they should be categorized in an organized and meaningful way. 4. Analyze this statement and prepare a synopsis . The synopsis should reflect all aspects on the assignment and clearly connect all the pieces. Some example questions to help you analyze your spending (note: do not just answer these questions – it should be a narrative, not an interview): Where did most of your money go? What surprised you about your spending? Was your spending in line with the values and goals you identified at the beginning? Did you spend more than your income? Most people spend more than they realize on certain expenses – was this the case for you? What changes might you make in the future? How does your spending plan reflect what you learned by tracking your expenses and how will you align it with your goals and values? 5. Based on this synopsis, construct a spending plan for going forward. If your i ncome is not consistent, do your best to estimate. Here you decide how you ideally would like to spend your money – in a way that is aligned with your values and that prioritizes yours goals. 6. The final assignment you hand in should be no more than 3 -4 pag es in length. One page should be for your cash flow statement, one for your budget and 1 -2 pages for your goals, values, and overall synopsis. Use your best judgement on the level of detail to provide (as well as document formatting, such as double -spaced, single spaced, font size, etc.). Assignments will be evaluated based on quality, presentation of data, and content. Submission Requirements: • You may only submit ONE file. What you are submitting is an overall report, not a series of documents. That means you will have to copy and paste any tables or graphs from Excel or other applications and format them properly. Do your best to create a profe ssional -looking document. • Your report must be in either Word (.doc or .docx) or a PDF document. No other file types will be accepted. Note: If you do not feel comfortable providing exact figures, you can translate the numbers into percentages. For exampl e, if my total spending for the month was $1,000 and I spent $400 on rent, I would report that 40% of my income went to rent.
