Textbooks required, Readings & Materials: Berlo, J., & Phillips, R. (2014). Native North American Art, (Second Edition). Bradford, Oxford University Press. Assignments : Art Profile: Each student will individually pick an Indigenous Nation (First Nation, Métis Nation, Inuit Nation) and profile their art culturally and historically, in a 1000 – 1250 word essay, Chicago Manual of Style, double spaced and 12-point Times New Roman font. Students will research the People’s artwork, history and culture utilizing academic resources. Research should include: how their art has changed over time, prominent artists from the Nation. and how their art contributes to or is influenced by their culture. Students must use proper citations and are expected to use a minimum of two peer-reviewed sources (the class textbook will not count as one of these sources). Rubric: 20 marks total Art history of the Indigenous Nation… 5 marks How their culture contributes to their art… 5 marks Prominent artists… 5 marks Format/citation, spelling/grammar. 5 marks Art as Resistance Proposal & Annotated Bibliography: Each student will conduct preliminary research on a form of resistance in regards to a specific Indigenous Rights issue (legal system, education, housing, MMIWG2S, healthcare, water, land… etc.). Students will individually propose how they will create and connect an original art piece that showcases how art can be used as a form of resistance in reference to Indigenous Nations and Indigenous artists who have used art as a political tool. In addition to their proposed art creation, students are expected to complete an annotated bibliography that will show their preliminary research and sources to be used in their final presentation using a minimum of 5 sources, maximum 8. Their proposal paper will be 1000 words typed Chicago Manual of Style, double spaced and 12-point Times New Roman font. Students must use academic practice and outside sources to provide a critical look at their proposed presentation. Students must use proper citations. Annotated Bibliography… 10 marks Proposal… 5 marks Format/citation, spelling/grammar… 5 marks Art as Resistance: Each student will continue their research on an Indigenous art as a form of resistance in regards to a specific Indigenous Rights issue (legal system, education, housing, MIMIWG2S, healthcare, water, land… etc.). Students will individually present how art can be used as a form of resistance in reference to Indigenous Nations and Indigenous artists who have used art as a political tool, through creation of an art piece to be presented to their classmates. Students may use any safe and appropriate materials and format for their art piece. In addition to the art creation, students are expected to explain their art piece within 1 page, Chicago Manual of Style, double spaced and 12-point Times New Roman font reflection and present their work to the class in a 5 min max presentation Rubric: 20 marks total Explain the Indigenous Rights issue you chose to represent… 5 marks Discuss Indigenous artists and movements that inspired your piece… S marks Explain the art you created and what it represents 5 marks Describe and discuss how it contributes to art as resistance… 5 marks
