There are so many TV shows and movies today that portray nursing in a different light from what it actually is. Some Hollywood drama or movies creates a picture in which nurses are seen as doctor’s helper, sexual symbol or clowns. Even nurses’ uniforms are worn as costumes for private parties and Halloweens. Such portrayal are demeaning to nurses and discouraging to young people who aspire to be nurses one day. There are rarely shows portraying nurses demonstrating clinical skills and compassionate care in settings like community clinics, outpatient facilities, or in the home that we know we deliver. It has a negative impact on people’s perception because what people see affects what they think, and what they think affects what they do. Some shows like “Trauma: Life in the E.R” actually show real events that take place in Hospitals and real nurses in action caring for patients.  This is one show that is actually based on real life events that gives an accurate picture of what a nurse’s daily routine is in the real world. To better educate the general public, more real life shows need to replace the fictional drama series like “Nurse Jackie”, “House” which do not in any way reflect the professionalism and standards of nursing practice.  Another way to correct this poor image is “leading by example”, meaning that the way we present ourselves to the public will affect we are viewed. If we present ourselves like the professionals that we are, in our character, dressing, speaking, etc, the public can change any negative perception they have of us.  We can also organize rallys, public outreach programs, symposiums in which we educate the community about our profession and what it entails.
