The Baroque was very much like the Renaissance but also extremely theatrical. While the figures in the Renaissance were restrained and triangular, the Baroque is very emotional and triangular groupings give way to spiral compositions. For fun, compare: Artemesia Gentileshi’s “Judith Decapitating Holofernes” Artemesia Gentilischi – Judith Decapitating Holofernes with Caravaggio’s “Judith Decapitating Holofernes” Carravaggop = Judith Decapitating Holofernes both are done during the Baroque in Italy, yet very different approaches to a gory subject. Both artists had fascinating lives (Gentileschi was raped and Caravaggio commited murder). Besides their lives, what are the stylistic approaches to the subject matter that are the same?
