What is empowerment? How would I define empowerment?
Empowerment can be used in many different situations and with any kind of person. When we empower someone, we are giving them the tools and resources to accomplish things and make decisions ( HRzone .com, n.d.). In the line of work that I do currently our form of empowerment is that all our clients are creative, resourceful and whole. They know their lives best and no what works and doesn’t work for them. We help them along the way by empowering them with their decisions that they are making to change their life. Empowerment is almost like giving the person knowledge and they are then able to make those decisions and be happy about the decisions that they choose. Empowering employees will give them a sense that they are being seen by management and when that happens you will see greater work out of your employees.
Disadvantages of empowering employees.
There are disadvantages that can come with empowering your employees. You may have inexperienced workers that you are handing down responsibilities that they are not capable of making an informed decision about. This can lead to mistake for the company and could potential put the company’s reputation at risk. There may be a chance for some decisions being bias from the employee that is given authority and subordinates may have a problem with that and could potential have a less efficient workforce (Ayers, 2016). Without proper training and set guidelines you may run into trouble with the empowerment of employees. There must be guidance with the goals so that they fall in line with the company’s overall vision. One major risk is that you are trusting these employees with information that if leaked could damage the company (Hamlin, n.d.).
Advantages of empowering employees.
When you give your employees the chance to make their own decisions you can help to increase your productivity because they won’t have to wait around for approval from a manager. The employees are made to feel like they matter and because of this it leads to employee satisfaction. Once an employee is made to feel that the company trusts them though this empowerment it can help increase moral of the employees which in turn will increase productivity. Empowering employees will also increase the quality of work that they are doing. If an empowered employee is given the proper training, they will feel that they have a stake within the company and their work that you will see quality results from those empowered employees (Hamlin, n.d.).
