We can sum up this week’s readings in the following ways: racism in urban space is a relationship between disinvestment and reinvestment, where disinvestment is constituted by planned shrinkage/triage policies to create areas that are “left to die,” and reinvestment is constituted by capital-intensive developments/state-resources to create and promote areas that are “remaining alive.” Spatial racism therefore is a relational structure between “left to die” and “remaining alive.” In your experience, have you encountered such relational urban spaces? If you do not have direct experiences, have you heard of such urban spaces? You are welcomed to use personal experiences or newspaper resources.
