When many people think of research ethics, they think of the informed consent process. The informed consent process allows potential research participants to make a knowing, considered decision to participate voluntarily. In the 21st century, informed consent and other research ethics practices are facing new challenges, such as the handling of “big data,” genomics research, and the need to study rapidly and ethically the emerging infectious diseases in times of pandemic threats.

With these thoughts in mind:

Savannah Engineering, Inspection and Insurance Company’s (SEIIC’s) primary recruiting need is for engineering and technical personnel. Over that last two decades, these professions have generally been in high demand and relatively scarce supply. As the HR manager responsible for recruiting and selecting people in these fields, you need to stay abreast of trends that affect the demand for and availability of these personnel.

Building on the background work you conducted in Week 1 (attached)on the various trends affecting SEIIC:

• Evaluate issues in the current environment that affect the demand for and supply of engineering and technical personnel.

• Identify one historical example and one contemporary example of discrimination. Consider the underlying causes and the consequences of discrimination in these cases.

Submit a 3- to 4-page paper in which you do the following for both your historical example and your contemporary example of discrimination:

• Analyze the major cause(s) of discrimination.
• Analyze how discrimination has been manifested.
• Analyze the consequences of the discrimination. How has discrimination benefitted one group over another?
• Apply one or more of the theories of prejudice and discrimination (covered in Chapter 3 of the course text (Marger, 2015)) to analyze each example.
• Analyze any social policies that have emerged in order to address the acts of discrimination.
