Step 1: Review the Case Study

Chapter 3 of Child and Adolescent Development opens
with a case study that presents the issue of “family balancing” in a
professional context. At the end of Chapter 3, the text presents two
professional responses to the case study. Before you write your response,
please review these pages.

Step 2: Construct a “Critical Considerations” Letter to the
Family

After reviewing the case and Dr. Welch’s response to “family
balancing,” write your own detailed letter to the family, discussing aspects of
their dilemma and direct, specific advice that you can offer them. Consider the
following questions while writing your letter:

• What
  are the pros of engaging in “family balancing” practices and technologies?
• What
  are the cons of engaging in “family balancing” practices and technologies?
• What,
  specifically, do you think the family should consider when making their
  decision? Why these considerations?
• What
  specific steps would you advise this family to take in thinking through
  and making their decision? Why these steps?
