Your father is working in his shop and cuts his wrist with the slip of a sharp chisel blade. The blood appears bright red. What feature might you check for to decide whether he has lacerated a vein or an artery?

Discussion 1. My father cut his wrist with a sharp chisel blade. I need to determine whether he cut into a vein or artery. The feature I would check is the speed and force that he is bleeding. If it’s a slower bleed that stops with light pressure over a small amount a time, then it is a vein. If the blood is forcefully and rapidly flowing out, and he needs heavy pressure for a longer amount of time held, then it is an artery. I also believe the shade of red tells us whether it’s a vein or artery. Darker blood is an artery, and a brighter red is a vein. I think this because blood in the veins is already oxygenated.

Bright red usually indicates an arterial bleed. But we would also want to note if the blood is oozing or squirting. Also the artery runs on the lateral side of the anterior portion of the arm. The thumb side where a pulse is felt. So if the cut is there, bright red and squirting I would feel pretty confident in saying it is arterial. I work in an ER as a Paramedic, not the kind of paramedic that has a truck and helps out in the ER between calls, I function as a tech. I love my job. I actually had a case similar to this where a young lady was opening boxes with a box cutter. The box cutter slipped and poked in just the right spot. I had to stand there holding pressure for 45 minutes. If my hand cramped I had to change hands and that thing was squirting a good few inches. She was supposed to be flown out to our sister hospital that has a vascular surgeon but due to how rude and aggressive she had become with staff, very un-lady like, the flight medics refused to transport her. I had NEVER seen that! She did whip the seatbelt out of the medics had and swing it away from her screaming that no one is strapping her down. Anyways after about a five minute break she blead through the pressure bandage the medics had applied while getting ready to attempt her transfer, and I was back to holding the artery and being berated. Have I mentioned I love my job?
