Statistics: Identifying Variables

Clearly identifying the independent and dependent variables in a study is a critical aspect of any research project. The dissertation is no different. This assignment will allow you to practice your skills in identifying research variables.

General Requirements:

Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:

  • In a study investigating the effects of humor on memory, Schmidt showed participants a list of sentences, half of which were humorous and half were non-humorous. Schmidt found that participants consistently recalled more of the humorous sentences than the non-humorous sentences, demonstrating that the use of humor increased participants’ recall of sentences.
  • This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
  • Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.
  • This assignment requires that at least two additional scholarly research sources related to this topic, and at least one in-text citation from each source be included.

Directions:

In an essay (250-500 words), address the following items:

  1. Identify the independent variable for this study.
  2. Identify the dependent variable for this study.
  3. Describe the scale of measurement used for the independent variable.
  4. Describe the scale of measurement used for the dependent variable.
  5. Provide an example of a simple study using Schmidt as a model. State the purpose of the research (Schmidt’s purpose was to examine the effects of humor on memory), the research question (Schmidt’s research question was: What are the effects of humor on memory?), the independent variable, and the dependent variable for your study.

Cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases are the top four noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)

Cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases are the top four noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Together, they contribute to the largest morbidity and mortality rates worldwide (World Health Organization, 2011). Once considered “diseases of affluence,” NCDs are now epidemic in developing countries (World Health Organization, 2011). The determinants of an NCD are complex as multiple risk factors contribute to the development of an NCD. Traditionally, these risk factors are categorized as nonmodifiable and modifiable. Nonmodifiable risk factors are age, sex, and genetic makeup. In contrast, modifiable risk factors are poor diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and harmful alcohol use—the health habits. These health habits are powerfully influenced by social networks and social environment—the social determinants.

Public health programs and health care delivery should be integrated into policy to fully address the burden of NCDs. However, policy alone is not enough unless it is implemented effectively. There must be a long-term and continuing collaboration among multiple stakeholders (e.g., agencies, foundations, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector). Subsequent steps may require implementation of best buys—investments in innovative preventive health strategies, improvements in surveillance, agreement on targets, and the creation of realistic timelines.

For this Discussion, review the week’s Learning Resources. Select one of the NCDs you read about in the Learning Resources on which to base your discussion. Then, in the Walden Library or the Internet, search for information on this NCD in a country other than yours. Think about initiatives that might reduce the burden of this disease.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post a brief description of the NCD that you selected and include the descriptive epidemiology of the disease in a country different from your own. Explain how the modifiable risk factors for the NCD differ between the country you selected and the country you live in. Based on the risk factors, explain an initiative that you might advocate to reduce the burden of the disease in the country you selected. Support your post using scholarly sources.

Government Versus Private Funding

Explore the difference between the following:

Medicare, Medicaid, and a private insurance of your choice (such as Major Medical, PPO or HMO):

Respond to the list of questions below for each, supporting your answers with resources appropriate to the topic

1. Describe how this insurance is paid for? Who pays for it?

2. Who is eligible to have this insurance? Why?

3. How does the insurance work? (Co-payments, Deductibles, Premiums, Capitation, etc.?

4. Give an example of a healthcare service covered under this insurance type? Evaluate how the service is paid for and what is needed for the individual to obtain the service.

5. Is their any political impact on the financial support of these insurance types?

To support your work, use your course and textbook readings and also use the South University Online Library. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.

Your initial posting should be addressed at 150-300 words. Submit your document to this Discussion Area bythe due date assigned. Be sure to cite your sources using APA format.

Command And Control Architecture

Now that you have explored the various unmanned system C3 architectural design features and their associated elements, you should be able to compare and contrast via analysis the different technologies employed by the different operational domains (air, ground, maritime). Think of the deltas between the different domains and how those differences impact the use of unmanned systems from multiple perspectives, control, safety, human factors, policy, etc. Your response should include your analysis of two domains (air vs ground, air vs maritime, or ground vs maritime) and how the C3 architecture is both common and yet unique between the two different domains. Areas that you may want to explore could include any combination of the below elements or others that you identify.

Uniqueness between 2 different domains:

  • Environment (ex: air, water, mountain, sand …)
  • Communication Links
  • Command and Control Strategies
  • Commonalities between 2 different domains
  • Control Systems (ex: GCS, GUI …)
  • Remote Vehicle (ex: UAV, UGV, UUV)

Qualitative Design Development

Develop and post in this forum a slideshow presentation that presents a research proposal for the qualitative scenario below.

Your presentation should include:

  • Title slide with your name
  • Problem Statement
  • Research Question(s)
  • Qualitative Design (Strategy of Inquiry)
  • Data Collection Plan
  • References

Scenario
There are numerous factors that go into starting up a company. In recent space flight tourism start-up, StuGoSpace, the board of directors is concerned that marketing will not target the right demographic. They have budgeted to spend $20M on advertising and want to ensure that the money is spent wisely, attracting the best potential travelers for their newly tested (and FAA approved) 8-person, commercial spacecraft. The company is going to lease operations out of New Mexico and wants to target any high potential travelers who can afford the $600K per seat/1.5-hour low-earth-orbit spaceflight.
You have been asked as a consultant to:
Define the problem.
Develop a qualitative research design that includes a research question(s), strategy of inquiry, and data collection plan.

The mission of is to develop not only scholar-practitioners, but also to foster positive social change.

The mission of is to develop not only scholar-practitioners, but also to foster positive social change. This mission has great potential impact for students at any degree level, but, for the  student, it is particularly relevant. The research that you undertake, and the questions that you ask to “fill in the gaps” of what is known and what is not known can have authentic, far-reaching ramifications. Quality Indicator 6 in the Guide poses this question: “Does this project have [the] potential to [e]ffect positive social change?” The “An Annotated Outline” section within the Guide—your model for completing your own draft—includes a section titled “Significance” that asks, “How might the potential findings lead to positive social change?” The tenets of positive social change are deeply embedded, and your own research will continue to contribute to that tradition.

With consideration to this clear commitment, think about your area of interest and your research questions. How does your research topic contribute to positive social change? Additional consideration of this question at this point might further fuel your capstone efforts.

Post a brief description of your capstone topic and an explanation of the purpose of your study. Explain how your  research might effect social change. Be specific and use examples to illustrate your explanation.

Your Research and Social Change

Preliminary Research Proposal

To prepare for this discussion, read the instructor’s guidance and watch the videos Creating Your Research Proposal (Links to an external site.) and How to Write a Research Proposal? 11 Things to Include in a Thesis Proposal (Links to an external site.). Your initial post should be 250 to 300 words. Utilize a minimum of two peer-reviewed sources that were published within the last 10 years and are documented in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

The purpose of this discussion assignment is to familiarize you with the purpose and components of a research proposal and to allow an opportunity for you to get some feedback on your ideas for the Final Paper.

Topic: how the family can help their family member dealing with PTSD?

In your initial post,

  • 1. Briefly describe the purpose of a research proposal and its components.
  • 2. Present your research question and/or hypothesis.
  • 3. Give some background information on the topic, including citing one or two previous related studies with their references.
  • 4. Name the research design you would like to use.
  • 5. Defend why you feel it is the most appropriate way to study your research question.
  • 6. Discuss potential ethical issues that might arise and what you would do to address them.

Document your sources in APA style (Links to an external site.), with in-text citations and references listed at the end of the post. For additional guidance see the Citing Within Your Paper (Links to an external site.) and Formatting Your References List (Links to an external site.) resources from the Ashford Writing Center.

Leadrership Self- Assessment

Preparation

You have been offered the opportunity to apply for a leadership position in your organization. As a part of the application process, your potential employer uses the National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL) competency model of leadership development (NCHL, 2016), which includes a 360-degree evaluation. The evaluation is an assessment that includes anonymous, confidential feedback from those around you, such as your peers, supervisor, direct reports, and stakeholders, as well as a self-assessment on behavior (relational), technical and operational skills, and strategic ability. As a part of this 360-degree evaluation, you will complete the self-assessment component. This information will be shared with the interview committee for the position, so it is important that you demonstrate your knowledge and experience in each of the areas outlined in the self-assessment requirements below.

Note: Remember, you can submit all or a portion of your draft to Smarthinking for feedback before you submit the final version of your work for this assessment. However, be mindful of the turnaround time for receiving feedback if you plan on using this free service.

Discussion: Myths Of Sexual Violence

Myths and misinformation surround the topic of sexual violence. For years, these myths have hung around the discourse, further muddying an already difficult topic about which to communicate. Although all myths can be harmful, there are some that may be arguably more harmful. For this Discussion, you identify some of the myths surrounding the topic of sexual abuse and consider why they have remained so prevalent.

Post an explanation of which myths of sexual violence you think are the most harmful and why. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer.
