Ability, Disability, And Erasure

Consider the notion that an individual with a disability may feel primarily defined by his or her ability status. Also, consider the historical treatment of people with disabilities and the number of individuals who were euthanized and sterilized in the U.S. and across the globe due to having a disability.

For decades, individuals with disabilities were left in institutions, hidden away from the rest of society. Parents were told if their child was born with a disability, they should have them locked away. Consider in today’s society how people with disabilities are still “hidden.” Think about how many people you see each day that have a visible disability. While there are many hidden disabilities that should not be ignored, it is significant to recognize the limited number of people you see each day with disabilities. Also, consider how others react toward a person with a disability in public. Do they stare? Do they move away? Do they invade the person’s space and ask inappropriate questions? What experiences have you seen in public with a person with a disability? Why do you think society has marginalized this group for so long? Why are those with disabilities limited or eliminated from full participation in society today? Who has the right to decide what makes a “good life” and how is that decision made?

To prepare: Read the case “Working With Individuals With Disabilities: Valerie.”

Post an explanation of why our society has marginalized those with varying abilities historically. Then, explain the role of social workers in supporting clients with varying abilities (not limited to physical and mental) while recognizing and honoring those clients’ other identity characteristics. Use specific examples from the case study in your explanation.

Working With Clients With Disabilities: The Case of Valerie

Valerie is a 56-year-old, heterosexual, African American female. She receives Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and works part time at a credit card company as a telemarketer. She currently lives in an apartment alone but receives home attendant services for 5 hours a day. She lost her left leg when she was hit by a car and has a prosthesis. She uses a walker or an electric scooter to be ambulatory but generally prefers the scooter. She is slightly overweight, which makes using the walker more painful. She has been prescribed Zoloft® (100 mg per day) for general anxiety and has been taking it for almost 3 years. Valerie has a history of drug and alcohol abuse, although she has been drug free for 15 years. She has a core group of friends she has maintained a relationship with over the course of her lifetime, and although she does not see them as often as she would like, she keeps in touch over the phone and through email. She has no criminal background.

Valerie came for services to address unresolved feelings related to an abusive marriage. She continued to be in contact with her ex-husband, John, although they had been divorced for almost 13 years. Valerie said that she and John had remained intimate since the separation and divorce and that John texted and called her to meet for sex. She felt torn because she believed no one else would want to date her due to her disability but also felt John was using her. She also stated that although he had stopped hitting her, he continued to be verbally abusive. She remained anxious and depressed and felt hopeless about the situation.

Valerie said John abused alcohol and began using drugs in the first few years of their marriage. Unaware of his illicit drug use, Valerie arrived home from work early one day to surprise him and found him using cocaine. John attacked her and forced her to use cocaine as well. She relented due to her fear of continued assault. An ongoing pattern of drug use and physical assault persisted throughout their marriage.

Valerie lost her left leg when she was walking across the street and was hit by a car, and she spent close to 9 months in the hospital and a rehabilitation program. She was fitted for a prosthetic leg and given an electric scooter through her insurance company, which allowed her to begin working part time at a credit card company when she returned home. John’s abusive behavior and drug use continued, so Valerie hid her paychecks, slowly saving her money until she had enough to leave. Eventually, she was able to rent a room. In addition, she was able to secure the assistance of a home health aide.

Valerie began individual and group sessions to address her feelings of depression and anxiety. I worked with her to set manageable goals to increase her independence in physical functioning and from her ex-husband’s controlling and abusive behaviors. Valerie and I agreed to use cognitive behavioral therapy to address her continued negative thought patterns that affected her behavior. Valerie shared many insights into her disability to help me understand how she felt in a world that was not very accessible. Through our meetings, I learned about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and how inaccessible buildings and programs affected her quality of life. We met once a week for 3 months, and I monitored Valerie’s depression through a baseline and then periodic administrations of a depression screen using the Beck Depression Inventory.

After 12 weeks, we decided together it was time for termination. She reported fewer episodes of anxiety and expressed feelings of hope for the future. She continued to attend the group sessions and found new friends who had become a support network for her. She had stopped seeing her ex-husband and changed her phone number to prevent him from contacting her.

Policies And Procedures

As a continuation to examining your policies, review for procedures that may relate to them.

  • In a 4-page paper, describe the procedures for each of the two compliance plans.
    • Break each procedure section into 2 pages each.
    • Remember to support your procedures for each of two plans with a total of three research sources (1-2 per procedure), cited at the end in APA format.
    • Write your procedures in a way that all employees will understand at a large medical facility where you are the Compliance Officer.
  • Remember, you chose two compliance policy plans under the key compliance areas of Compliance Standards, High-Level Responsibility, Education, Communication, Monitoring/Auditing (for Safety), Enforcement/Discipline, and Response/Prevention. (Check them out if you forget! Remember, you may have written about different policies for the two different compliance plans.)

Submit your completed assignment by following the directions linked below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.

Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document. (Mac users, please remember to append the “.docx” extension to the filename.) The name of the file should be your first initial and last name, followed by an underscore and the name of the assignment, and an underscore and the date. An example is shown below:

Media Bias and Propaganda

Directions:
Using the concepts learned through the readings and lecture pages, select a social issue or ethical dilemma in the news. Find three recent articles from three different media sources on the issue and then answer the following questions:
*What assumptions do you make about these articles before reading them? How is your mind already “at work”?
*What evidence of bias can you find in the articles selected? *What is the point of view expressed (if there is one) by the article?
*How do the stories favor privileged views?
*What is a peer-reviewed source? What peer-reviewed sources did you find that helped in thinking critically about your issue?

Requirements:

Healthcare Spending And Services

Healthcare data at a community, county, or region level and state level determine healthcare spending and services allocated for individuals. Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research about these data as it will help you build a reality of costs of care for the healthcare system and beyond.

Research your own geographic region (town, city, county, or state) for data that is commonly used in health services systems. This includes census data, vital statistics data (birth, deaths, marriages, and divorces), surveillance data, administrative data, and survey research data. Keep in mind that most of this data will come from federal, state, or local offices that are federally mandated, but don’t stop there. You may find data in other surprising places.

Based on your readings and research, answer the following:

  1. Which office contains the health-related data identified above?
  2. How do people go about enrolling for Medicare and Medicaid in your community? Describe the eligibility requirements and costs, if any, for each of these types of subsidized care.
    • Coverage for acute care, including hospitalization
    • Coverage for preventive care
    • Outpatient services
    • Specialty services, such as mental health, rehabilitation, etc.

To support your work, use your course and textbook readings and also use the South University Online Library. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.

Your initial posting should be addressed at 150-300 words. Submit your document to this Discussion Area bythe due date assigned. Be sure to cite your sources using APA format.

Due November 23 at 10:59 PM

Before beginning work on this discussion forum, please review the link Doing Discussion Questions Right, the expanded grading rubric for the forum, and any specific instructions for this topic.

From the bulleted list below, select one topic for which you will lead the discussion in the forum this week. Early in the week, reserve your selected topic by posting your response (reservation post) to the Discussion Area and identifying your topic in the subject line. By the due date assigned, research your topic and start a scholarly conversation as you respond with your initial or primary post to your own reservation post in the Discussion Area. Make sure your response does not duplicate your classmates’ responses.

    • Research two different theories about personality. Compare the theories and draw conclusions relative to leaders. Answer “so what?” That is, your post needs to provide clear practitioner value.
    • Research criteria for making ethical decisions. Draw conclusions relative to leaders. Answer “so what?” That is, your post needs to provide clear practitioner value.
    • Propose a model for leading change, including potential strengths and weaknesses of the model. Answer “so what?” That is, your post needs to provide clear practitioner value.
    • Research an issue pertaining to leadership that has not been specifically addressed in course materials thus far (e.g., gender, diversity, culture, innovation, learning, negotiation, global cultural dimensions, and emotional intelligence). Answer “so what?” That is, your post needs to provide clear practitioner value.

As the beginning of a scholarly conversation, your initial post should be:

    • Succinct—no more than 500 words.
    • Provocative—use concepts and combinations of concepts from the readings to propose relationships, causes, and/or consequences that inspire others to engage (inquire, learn). In other words, take a scholarly stand.
    • Supported—scholarly conversations are more than opinions. Ideas, statements, and conclusions are supported by clear research and citations from course materials as well as other credible, peer-reviewed resources.

    For grading:

    • The reservation post and initial post are assessed in the rubric line item “Quality of initial posting.”
    • Neither the reservation post nor the initial post count toward days of participation.

    Assignment

Task: Submit to complete this assignment
Due November 27 at 10:59 PM

    Leadership Development and Succession

Throughout the course, you have studied a variety of theories about leadership. By now, you should be developing your own perspective on who the leader is and what the leader does. You likely have gravitated towards certain styles and ideas about leadership.

For the Week 5 paper, you will design a leadership development program for an organization of your choice.

    Tasks:

    • Summarize the key details about your organization. What is it? What does it do? How does it currently develop (or not develop leaders)? Don’t just copy and paste your writing from the Week 1 introduction. Further summarize organizational details.
    • Assess leadership. What is it? Why is it important?
    • Defend an approach (e.g., style or theory) to leadership that you wish to replicate throughout the organization you have selected. Why is it appropriate for the organization?
    • Design a leadership development plan to infuse your selected leadership approach into the organization. The plan can be a 2- to 3-page summary of a process, set of action steps, modules, or other means you will use to develop leaders.
    • Propose a leadership succession perspective for your organization. Why is succession planning important? What are the consequences of failing to do so? What are the benefits of having a succession plan? What are 3 or 4 critical action steps the organization should take to build good leadership succession?
    • Synthesize your self-development in leadership perspective and practice as a result of study in the course. What did you think about leadership coming into the course? How has your thinking and practice changed because of your study?

    Submission Details:

    • Complete your analysis in an 8–10-page Microsoft Word document, using APA style.
    • Name your document SU_MGT7115_W5_LastName_FirstInitial.doc.
    • Submit your document to the Submissions Area by the due date assigned.

    Exemplary Leadership Competency

Bennis (2012) identifies four areas of competency shared by top leaders.

    • Management of Attention: “The first leadership competency is the management of attention through a set of intentions or a vision, not in a mystical or religious sense, but in the sense of outcome, goal, or direction” (p. 83).
    • Management of Meaning: “Leaders make ideas tangible and real to others, so they can support them…. The leader’s goal is not mere explanation or clarification, but the creation of meaning…. Effective leaders can communicate ideas through several organizational layers, across great distances, even through the jamming signals of special interest groups and opponents” (p. 84).
    • Management of Trust: “Trust is essential in all organizations. The main determinant of trust is reliability, what I call constancy…. A recent study showed people would much rather follow individuals they can count on, even when they disagree with their viewpoint, than people they agree with but who shift positions frequently” (p. 85).
    • Management of Self: “Leaders know themselves; they know their strengths and nurture them” (p. 86).

Kouzes and Posner (2012)  identify five practices of exemplary leadership:

    • Model the Way: Leaders create standards of excellence and role model how people should be treated and goals pursued.
    • Inspire a Shared Vision: Leaders envision the future and use passion and persuasion to align others to the pursuit of the vision.
    • Challenge the Process: Leaders search for ways to change the status quo.
    • Enable Others to Act: Leaders strengthen and empowers, building collaboration and respect.
    • Encourage the Heart: Leaders recognize others contributions, building a climate of hope and trust among organizational members.

    Tasks:

    • Select any two leadership approaches or theories in the course (e.g., trait, skill, style, situational, LMX, transactional/transformational, servant). Summarize the key information about each of the theories.
    • Utilizing the two leadership approaches or theories, assess how a leader might exercise the four areas of competency noted by Bennis (2012). In other words, how does each theory suggest a leader following that theory (or style or approach) manages attention, meaning, trust, and self? Be sure to assess how your two selected theories may interact with Bennis’ competencies differently.
    • Using the same two leadership approaches or theories, assess how a leader might exercise the five practices of exemplary leadership noted by Kouzes and Posner (2012). In other words, how does each theory address how a leader models the way, inspires a shared vision, challenges the process, enables others to act and encourages the heart?
    • What three (at least) leadership lessons can you synthesize?

    Submission Details:

    • Complete your paper in a 4–6-page Microsoft Word document, using APA style.

    Comprehensive Exam Prep

Looking ahead in your DBA program, the final step in the course sequence is a comprehensive exam. Students must successfully pass the comprehensive exam before moving on to the dissertation phase.

Your preparation for the comprehensive exam should have already started via your study in previous courses, self-documentation of your learning, and completion of the reflection journals with your mentor.

For the Week 3 paper, you will provide an annotated outline that:

    • Segments the OB field into at least three broad categories. You may have more than three categories, but the minimum for this assignment is three. For example:
      • Individual
      • Group/Team
      • Organizational/Environmental
    • Provides a set of core topics beneath each of the broad categories. At this point in your doctoral development, you must have at least five core topics for each category (thus, a minimum of fifteen total). You may have more than five topics for each category (and eventually you will in your preparation for the exam!) but the minimum for this assignment is five topics for each of your categories (or, at least a total of fifteen topics if you have more than three categories).

Due November 2 at 11:59 PM

Before beginning work on this discussion forum, please review the link Doing Discussion Questions Right, the expanded grading rubric for the forum, and any specific instructions for this topic.

From the bulleted list below, select one topic for which you will lead the discussion in the forum this week. Early in the week, reserve your selected topic by posting your response (reservation post) to the Discussion Area, identifying your topic in the subject line. By the due date assigned, research your topic and start a scholarly conversation as you respond with your initial or primary post to your own reservation post in the Discussion Area. Make sure your response does not duplicate your classmates’ responses.

    • Are leaders born or made? Defend a position for one perspective (born or made).
    • Does a Trait approach or a Skill approach best explain leadership? Defend a position for one perspective (trait or skills).
    • Justify three traits that you believe a leader must possess.
    • From the various concepts presented in the Skills Approach lecture, justify two skills that a leader might least need to possess.

    Assignment

Well done! You have completed the assignment
Due November 6 at 10:59 PM

    Breaking into Print

For this assignment, you are going to compose a brief, conceptual article for a scholarly journal of your choosing.

    Tasks:

    • Using the South University Online Library, locate a scholarly journal that publishes work on leadership. Review the journal’s website (or other material) to identify the author guidelines for submission.
      • Provide the journal name, web address (if available), and author guidelines as a separate page after the references in your paper (so that your instructor can review them—you would not normally provide the info in a publication submission).
      • Regardless of the author guidelines provided by your selected journal, the length of your submission is to be 1000–1500 words (4–6 pages, double spaced). Otherwise, follow the author guidelines for the technical aspects of your paper (e.g., specific styles such as APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.).
    • Imagine that the journal you have selected is requesting articles pertaining to the broad theme: Leadership Traits and Skills for the 21st Century.
      • You may select your own topic for submission as long as it clearly connects to the theme.
      • For example, you might write something about leader traits. You might write something about leader skills. You might write something about both. Following good scholarly writing, the introduction to your paper must justify what the topic is and why it is important.
      • As you compose your article, keep in mind the three ideas about scholarly conversations that you frequently see in discussion question instructions. Scholarly conversations are succinctprovocative, and supported. An article that lacks any of the three characteristics is unlikely to get publication approval from a reviewer or an editor.

    Submission Details:

    • Use APA format and style (or an alternative style provided in the journal’s author guidelines) for your paper.

MGT7115 WEEK ONE

Week 1

Who is a leader? An exhaustive answer to this question alone might require an entire course to pursue. Is a leader best understood as a position? A person? An action? A series of actions? The answer is all of the above—and more!

This week, you will begin tracing the development of leadership theories that give us insight into answering the question: Who is a leader? For example, you will begin evaluating the trait perspective of leadership.

As part of your inquiry, you will analyze the differences between leadership and management. Both functions are critical, but each requires different skill sets. For example, management emphasizes planning, organizing, controlling, and coordinating resources. Leadership emphasizes motivating and influencing people.

As you conduct your study, look for ways to assess how we might distinguish the internal dynamics of who a leader is from the external dynamics of what a leader does.

    1. This week covers the difference between leadership and management.
    2. This week covers trait and skills approaches to leadership.
    3. This week covers style and situational approaches to leadership.
    4. This week covers transformational and servant leadership.
    5. This week covers psychodynamic, ethical, and change dimensions of leadership.

Your Learning Objectives for the Week:

  • Critically evaluate leadership concepts to meet the demands of tomorrow’s complex organizations.
  • Analyze major theories of and approaches to organizational leadership in the literature.

    Discussion Topic

Well done! You have contributed to the discussion
Due October 26 at 11:59 PM

Before beginning work on this discussion forum, please review the link Doing Discussion Questions Right, the expanded grading rubric for the forum, and any specific instructions for this topic.

From the bulleted list below, select one topic for which you will lead the discussion in the forum this week. Early in the week, reserve your selected topic by posting your response (reservation post) to the Discussion Areaidentifying your topic in the subject line. By the due date assigned, research your topic and start a scholarly conversation as you respond with your initial or primary post to your own reservation post in the Discussion Area. Make sure your response does not duplicate your classmates’ responses.

    • Analyze the difference between the terms leader, leadership, manager,  and management. How does distinguishing between the terms provide researcher and practitioner benefit?
    • Compare the inquiries who a leader “is” and what a leader “does.” How does distinguishing the categories aid researchers and practitioners?
    • Assess the changes in the organizational environment (e.g., context in which most organizations operate) that have occurred over the past few decades. How has the changing environment affected the practice of leadership?
    • Evaluate the differences between these two statements: Leaders create vision. Leaders articulate vision. What are the implications for the practice of leadership?

As the beginning of a scholarly conversation, your initial post should be:

    • Succinct—no more than 500 words.
    • Provocative—use concepts and combinations of concepts from the readings to propose relationships, causes, and/or consequences that inspire others to engage (inquire, learn). In other words, take a scholarly stand.
    • Supported—scholarly conversations are more than opinions. Ideas, statements, and conclusions are supported by clear research and citations from course materials as well as other credible, peer-reviewed resources.

    For grading:

    • The reservation post and the initial post are assessed in the rubric line item “Quality of initial posting.”
    • Neither the reservation post nor the initial post count toward days of participation.
    • Follow-up posts made throughout the week to your colleagues and professor will apply to participation points in the rubric.
    • All posts will be assessed for writing mechanics and information literacy. Be sure to review the expanded rubric for more details on grading criteria.
  • Week 1 Project

    Assignment

Well done! You have completed the assignment
Due October 30 at 11:59 PM

    Overview

For this course, you will have a project that includes the written assignments in Weeks 13, and 5. The Week 3 and Week 5 assignments are considered major assignments, which combined are worth almost half of the total course points. It will likely take you more than one week to complete the Week 3 and Week 5 major assignments, so begin working on those tasks sooner rather than later.

    Project Summary:

Your course project will result in distinct deliverables for the Week 3 and Week 5 major assignments. Your Week 3 paper will provide a starter version of a comprehensive examination (for your DBA program) study document. Your Week 5 paper will provide a leadership development approach for an organization of your choice. For Week 1, you will begin summarizing the Week 3 and Week 5 work as well as looking for connections between the deliverables.

    Week 1: Introductory Summary

    Week 3: Comprehensive Exam Prep

    • Looking ahead in your DBA program, the final step in the course sequence is a comprehensive exam. Students must successfully pass the comprehensive exam before moving on to the dissertation phase.
    • Your preparation for the comprehensive exam should have already started via your study in previous courses, self-documentation of your learning, and completion of the reflection journals with your mentor.

You may have more than five topics for each category (and eventually you will in your preparation for the exam!) but the minimum for this assignment is five topics for each of your categories (or at least a total of fifteen topics if you have more than three categories).
    • Connects one annotated resource (key author—with a brief description or bullet points of important points the author makes about the topic) for your fifteen core topics. You may provide more than one resource per topic, but you must have at least one resource for a minimum of fifteen topics.

Week 5: Leadership Development and Succession

    • For the Week 5 paper, you will design a leadership development program for an organization of your choice.
    • The leadership development program will include:
      • A general discussion of leadership (e.g., what is it?)
      • Selection of an approach (e.g., style or theory) to leadership that you wish to build or replicate throughout the organization
      • Summary of a four-module development plan for infusing your selected leadership approach in the organization
      • Proposal of a leadership succession perspective for the organization

    Your Week 1 Tasks:

    • Introductory Summary (1–2 pages)
      • Although your course project has two distinct deliverables (comprehensive exam document in Week 3 and a leadership development and succession plan in Week 5), as a doctoral-level scholar, you should be able to synthesize connections between the two topics and activities.
      • Synthesize a 1- to 2-page summary of how the study of OB and preparation of a comprehensive preparation document can inform and enhance your design and delivery of a leadership development and succession plan. Support your synthesis with research.
    • Part 1: Comprehensive Exam Prep Document: First Thoughts (1–2 pages)
      • Defend an organizational motif or schema that helps break down the field of OB into smaller units (broad categories) for study (e.g., individual, group/team, organizational/environmental). Your schema must have at least three broad categories. Be sure to define each element of your schema.
    • Part 2: Leadership Development and Succession Plan: A Beginning (1–2 pages)
      • Select an organization for your study. The organization can be one you are currently part of, one you used to be part of, one you research, or even a hypothetical organization.
      • Summarize key details about the organization. What is it? What does it do? How would you describe its structure? How would you describe its culture? What issues is the organization currently experiencing that may be related to leadership problems? How does the organization currently develop leaders and plan for succession?

    Submission Details:

    • Complete your analysis in a 5–6-page Microsoft Word document, using APA style.
    • Name the document SU_MGT7115_W1_LastName_FirstInitial.doc.
    • Submit your document to the Submissions Area by the due date assigned.
